LCL or FCL: how to approach the choice
Shipment size matters in sea freight, but it is not the only consideration. Handling, departure planning and the complete journey to the destination also count.
Understanding a consolidated shipment
With less-than-container-load shipping, or LCL, several shippers share container space. This can suit cargo that does not need a whole container. Planning should account for consolidation before departure and separation after arrival, as well as the sea journey itself.
When to consider a full container
Full-container-load shipping, or FCL, reserves an entire container for the shipment. Every part of its space does not necessarily have to be filled. Alongside volume and weight, consider cargo sensitivity, loading arrangements and delivery organisation. Container suitability depends on the dimensions and requirements of the goods.
Compare the same scope of service
Check whether quotations cover the same stages: collection, port handling, sea transport and final delivery. Ask what is included and which charges may be additional. To receive a useful proposal, prepare cargo dimensions, weight, a description and precise origin and destination details.
